Onamae.com Now Accepting .co General Registration

Tokyo – July 21, 2010 -- Onamae.com, the ICANN-accredited domain registrar operated by GMO Internet, today begins accepting general registrations of the new top level domain .co.
The .co domain is the country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) for Columbia. With a character string that is a recognized abbreviation of the words “company” and “corporation” and that is also just one letter/keystroke away from the high-profile .com, the new .co is expected to be a popular top level domain.

About the .co Domain
1. Ideal for Business Use
Strong demand is expected for .co from Japanese companies due to its similarity to .co.jp and because of its association with the words “company” and “corporation”. In particular we expect to receive many applications from companies with names that end in Co.

2. Brand Protection and Securing Traffic
The .co domain will secure traffic from .com typing errors, and safeguard access to .com websites. Companies can register their domain name under .co  to  prevent being mimicked by phishing sites. We expect to receive defensive registrations from many companies as part of their brand management strategy. Securing your domain name in the .co namespace eliminates the potential user confusion and misunderstanding that may occur if a third party acquires your domain name.

About General Registration
Unlike the previous registration phases (Sunrise, Landrush) there are no auctions and all registrations are on a first-come-first-served basis. We cannot accept applications for domain names that have already been registered. For this reason we recommend that companies register early to prevent their products names, slogans, and relevant generic names being registered by third parties.
