GMO Internet Launches GMO Apps Cloud
Tokyo – July 5, 2010 – GMO Internet today confirms that it will launch GMO Apps Cloud in early August. Pre-applications for the service are now being accepted. At industry-low prices, GMO Apps Cloud offers a server environment optimized for apps to run on the major Japanese platforms GREE, mixi, and Mobage-town.

About the Service Launch
One of the biggest challenges to releasing an application for a social networking platform is hosting. GMO Internet consulted widely with existing social app providers about their current server usage and identified four key requirements.

1. The ability to handle large volumes of traffic directly after releasing an application and to be able to respond quickly and flexibly to fluctuations in traffic thereafter.
2. Bandwidth quality
3. Server specs
4. Low initial outlay (investment risk)

With high set up costs and lack of scalability, the standard dedicated web hosting services used to host large scale websites are not a cost effective solution for apps when traffic volume is unpredictable. Similarly, existing cloud hosting services often can’t guarantee the level of performance required by social app developers. Many developers in Japan use overseas cloud services. While these services offer low fees and high spec servers, app users often report slow response times – a downfall associated with hosting applications in offshore data centers. When significant response time delays occur, platform providers may in some cases may assume an application is down for maintenance and stop displaying it potentially resulting in considerable lost opportunity.
GMO Apps Cloud was developed to address the limitations of existing hosting options and provide an optimized infrastructure solution for social application providers. Over 420,000 companies have chosen GMO Internet Group to build and operate their web hosting solutions. Combining this extensive web hosting expertise with the knowledge and experience we have gained through the GMO Social Apps Initiative enables to provide the best possible environment for developing and operating social applications.

GMO Apps Cloud: Features
1. Hosting plans designed for application hosting
Six different server plans are available designed specifically to host apps. The custom designed service ensures that application providers aren’t paying for features they don’t use. In addition we go beyond what existing cloud environments offer with even greater scalability and server resources (over 200 concurrent servers). Developers can focus on application development without spending more time than necessary on performance tuning.
2. Simple Fee Structure and No Setup Costs
There are absolutely no setup fees for GMO Apps Cloud, we have eliminated this cost barrier for application developers. Overall costs are reduced - the only charges that apply are monthly fees for the selected plan and data transmission fees.
3. Local Data Center, 10 Gbps Shared Bandwidth
When bandwidth is slow, many platform providers will treat the application itself as being down for maintenance. In order to prevent this we offer high quality bandwidth (10 Gbps) and a data center located in Japan.
4. Free Pre-Release Server Usage plus 4 Days Free Usage after Release
GMO Apps Cloud offers up to 14 days free server usage between server setup and application release. In addition in the first 4 days after release when traffic is difficult to forecast we offer free usage of up to 20 servers (Type XS plan). This offer is intended to support new applications in the crucial first few days to attract users while at the same time helping to reduce initial costs.
5. Access Analytics Tools Essential for Fine Tuning
After releasing an app it is important to track usage trends and make adjustments accordingly. We provide free-of-charge access analytics tools especially designed in-house to measure parameters for social apps.
6. Feature Packed Cloud Service
Using our own control panel design, developers can add and remove servers, set load balancing and access other features. Usage can be scaled and apps updated quickly and at short notice.
