Reference: 2010 Mobile Market
In 2009 the mobile advertising market was impacted by a worsening economic climate. However, while advertising cutbacks were made in the recruiting and finance industries, advertising from content providers remained strong. Advertising spending in ecommerce and mobile ecommerce also grew. Overall the mobile advertising market achieved significant growth, up 22.2% over the previous year to an estimated 121 billion yen.
Content providers currently account for around 50% of the mobile advertising market. In 2010 growth in this market segment is expected to level off slightly, however we believe advertising spend from mail order and mobile ecommerce will increase In the second half of the year we will begin to see a full recovery in advertising by food and drink manufacturers and other consumables companies that held off on advertising in 2009. As a result the mobile advertising market is expected to expand by as much as or more than 120% from the previous year.

(*1) iMenu is a registered trademark of NTT DOCOMO, Inc.
(*2)Long tail: The sum total hits received by all Internet pages with a low frequency of hits is greater than sum total hits received by all pages with a high frequency of hits. The vast number of low traffic sites is the Internet’s long tail. For example in online stores, unlike in bricks and mortar stores, sales of the top 20% of products are often less than sales of the remaining 80% of products. The same phenomenon is believed to apply to search engines where search terms that occur at a low frequency account for a higher proportion of searches than search terms that occur at a high frequency.
