Kyoto City Selects GMO Payment Gateway to Process Donations in 20-Year Fundraising Campaign Supporting Major Restoration of World Heritage Listed Site
 
Tokyo – October 1, 2010 – GMO Internet Group company, GMO Payment Gateway today announces that Kyoto city has chosen the GMO-PG Public Sector Payment Processing Service to process credit card payments in its campaign to raise money for Kyoto’s historical Nijo Castle restoration project. 
The campaign entitled World Heritage Nijo Castle Fundraising Campaign will begin next year and continue until the end of restorations, expected to take approximately 20 years.
 
Background
In 2011, Kyoto city plans to embark on an extensive project to restore national treasures including Ninomaru Palace (part of Nijo Castle) and other cultural assets. The city aims to preserve world heritage listed site and former imperial residence, Nijo Castle as an important asset not only to Japan but for the entire world. Nijo castle was built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu. This major restoration project is expected to take twenty years and to encompass all historical buildings within the site including twenty-eight structures listed as cultural assets.
Kyoto city aims to raise 5 billion yen over twenty-one years (2010 – 2030) through the World Heritage Nijo Castle Fundraising Campaign targeting both citizens and tourists. Donations will be accepted from October 2, 2010.

GMO-PG Public Sector Credit Card Payment Processing Service
The GMO Payment Gateway Public Sector Credit Card Payment Processing Service has been adopted by the Japan Pension Service as well as municipal governments including Tokyo and Osaka City. All municipal governments in Japan now accept credit card payments or are planning to do so.
The GMO-PG service centralizes tasks like card validity checks, claims, and updates of card details and because it is provided as an ASP it can be implemented in a short period of time. In addition, online application is secured by personal identification security protocol 3D secure.
 
Outlook
Private final consumption spending in Japan is currently at around 291 trillion yen a year*1. Of that figure, the amount accounted for by credit card payments is no more than 42 trillion yen*2. The public sector, yet to fully adopt a credit card payment option, is estimated to receive payments worth between 20 trillion yen and 50 trillion yen. We expect the introduction of credit card payment in this field to further expand the credit card market, improve efficiency in the public sector and offer greater convenience for the user.
