GMO Payment Gateway Subsidiary Launches Payment Processing System for Smartphones

Tokyo – August 5, 2010 – Social Appli Payment Service, Inc. a GMO Payment Gateway subsidiary established in line with the company’s strategic objectives, today announces plans to launch a member identification and payment processing platform for Smartphones. The new service aimed at content providers and apps developers is to be named mopita and will launch this September.
mopita will enable content providers to deliver content, information services and applications to Smartphone platforms without having to build their own member identification and payment processing systems. In addition, providers will be able to handle essential small-ticket transaction and monthly billing payment functions.

Background
In 2009 we saw ongoing growth in mobile content and the market in Japan expanded by 55.25 billion yen (14% per cent from the previous year*1). In the same year, the number of Smartphone’s shipped worldwide topped 170 million (*2). The number of Smartphone users is expected to rise rapidly, reaching 390 million in 2013.
Content providers are now finding it necessary to cater to this growing market alongside the traditional cell phone market. However, unlike cell phone content sales, selling content and services for Smartphones requires a member identification and payment processing system and this is often an obstacle for providers expanding into the Smartphone market.
In response to this market need, Social Appli Payment Service plans to launch mopita in September this year to provide a member identification and payment processing platform for application developers and content providers.

About mopita
Membership Identification
In order to sell content to Smartphone users, a membership identification system is required to issue member IDs and passwords and manage membership and billing. mopita issues its own IDs and manages memberships and billing so that users don’t need to implement their own system.

Payment Processing System
In Japan, mobile content is generally billed via the user’s cell phone carrier, however billing Smartphone users requires a member identification and payment processing system. The mopita payment processing system uses GMO Payment Gateway’s PG Multi-Payment Service providing, a sophisticated and secure payment processing environment that eliminates the need for content providers to build their own systems.
Content sales requires the ability to handle small ticket transactions so the high fees charged by credit card companies can be prohibitive. In addition sellers who implement their own payment systems may have to undergo extensive screening by credit card companies which can delay implementation by over a month. mopita’s own screening process and fee structure gives content businesses fast, low-cost implementation of a payment processing system capable of handling small-ticket and recurring transactions.
Initially the service will handle credit card payments only. Going forward it will be expanded to offer other payment methods including WebMoney and PayPal.

Promotions
As well as providing a member identification and payment processing platform, mopita will also operate a content portal and conduct regular promotions to boost membership. Providers who use mopita can take advantage of this exposure and save on promotion costs by making their services available to Smartphone users via the mopita site. We expect to grow mopita membership to one million users in the first year.
