Owase
City, Mie Prefecture to Accept Credit Card Payments for Water Rates

Owase City, Mie Prefecture has resolved to introduce credit card settlement for water rates to make payment more convenient for Owase City citizens.
The service will be introduced for the payment of April 2008 water rates through a partnership between JCB Co. Ltd, 105 DC Card Inc, and Mitsubishi UFJ NICOS Co.,Ltd. Owase City citizens will be able to use all international brand JCB, VISA, and MasterCard cards as well as DC Card, UFJ Card, and NICOS Card.
The GMO Payment Gateway Credit Card Payment Processing Service for the Public Sector is being employed to handle credit card data processing.

Currently, throughout Japan taxes and other municipal government charges are generally paid in person at a government office, by bank transfer or at a convenience store. However with the recent growth of credit card payment processing usage demand from consumers in the public sector that want to pay electricity, water or television license fees has increased.

In Owase City, following November 2006 reforms to laws governing municipal government, various methods of payment for water rates have been investigated in response to this demand. It has now resolved to introduce credit card payments for water rates to improve citizen services and administrative efficiency.

All residents of Owase City will be able to pay water rates by credit card. Credit card details are registered at the time of application making it possible to make credit card payments every month. Residents who currently pay by bank transfer or in person may apply to pay by credit card as of course can new residents.

Owase City strives to continually provide improved citizen services. JCB, 105 DC, and Mitsubishi UFJ Nicos are working to expand the usage of credit cards for taxes and other charges in the public sector. At the same time GMO Payment Gateway is expanding its easy-to-implement credit card payment processing ASP service for the public sector, improving citizen services provided by government bodies and helping to make payment processing more efficient.
