GlobalSign Launches World’s First Fully Automated SSL Server Certificate Installation Service

  • GlobalSign K.K.

Tokyo – February 12, 2008 – GMO Hosting & Security consolidated subsidiary and digital authentication services company, GlobalSign today launches OneClick SSL API. The new service for web hosting companies and other service providers offers a fully automated process from CSR (*1) generation to SSL server certificate installation. GMO Hosting & Security is a GMO Internet Group company.
(*1) CSR (Certificate Signing Request): Includes the public key corresponding to the client’s private key. When this is digitally signed by the certificate authority it becomes the SSL server certificate.

Background
Web server administration once required a certain degree of technical skill, but nowadays, as hosting services become more sophisticated and control software more advanced, it is now possible to operate a server with very little technical knowledge.
However an understanding of PKI (*2) is still required to install SSL on a web server. It is necessary to be able to send e-mail verification and install a certificate sent by text-encoded e-mail. These are difficult tasks for first time users.
(*2) PKI (Public Key Infrastructure): A security system that uses public/private key pair cryptosystem technology.

OneClick SSL API
Existing services require an e-mail verification process to be carried out between the certificate authority and the user. Now GlobalSign has developed the OneClick SSL API service allowing this process to be built in to web server operations. Web hosting and other service operators can incorporate OneClick SSL API into their own services to completely automate SSL application from CSR generation and key management through to server certificate installation. This technology will allow hosting service operators to offer their clients a one-click SSL service that reduces costs and does not require a skilled technician for installation.
OneClick SSL API makes it possible for the web server administrator (hosting user) to install SSL without going through any CSR generation, verifaction or installation procedures. It is now possible for the user to go from certificate application through to issue entirely through web server administration and without special verification procedures involving the certificate authority.
*The certificates issued by the OneClick SSL service are domain verification type Quick Authentication SSL certificates.
GlobalSign has simplified once complex SSL server certificate use and created a value-added product. GlobalSign is more than just a company that verifies, issues, and sells certificates. As a service provider that operates our own certificate authority we strive to provide services that offer value to a wide range of customers.
