GMO Internet Launches World First SSL Server Certificate Service Delivered by Domain Registrar/ Certificate Authority Partnership

Tokyo – January 31, 2008 -- GMO Internet official ICANN(*1) domain registration service, Onamae.com and GMO Internet Group digital authentication services provider, GlobalSign announce the launch today of the world’s first SSL server certificate service jointly developed by a domain registrar and a certificate authority (service name: Onamae.com x GlobalSign SSL server certificate service).
At the same time Onamae.com launches the second part of its three-part campaign, the Free SSL Server Certificate Campaign. We are offering free SSL certificates valid for six months to the first 300 customers who apply.
Onamae.com x GlobalSign SSL Server Certificate Service
The Onamae.com x GlobalSign SSL Server Certificate service is a quick issue SSL server certificate service that minimizes the various application procedures required at the time of certificate issue by linking up the domain registrar and certificate authority authentication processes. Customers that have registered domains with onamae.com or who intend to register domains with Onamae.com can now acquire SSL server certificates almost instantaneously, faster even than the GlobalSign Quick Authentication SSL service and without going through lengthy application procedures.
Onamae.com x GlobalSign SSL Server Certificate Service Features
(1) Simplification of SSL Server Certificate Application Procedures
The information provided at the time of the customer’s Onamae.com domain registration is used as the identification required for the certificate application so there is no need for authentication e-mail addresses (a server administrator only address. Eg: admin@root), verification documents, or lengthy e-mail authorization procedures.
(2) No Need for the Customer to Generate a Private Key (*2) or CSR (*3)
The service uses GlobalSign Skip Application (*) technology so that unlike other SSL server certificates the customer is not required to generate the private key and provide a CSR at the time of application. This means that SSL certificate applications no longer require specialist PKI(*4) knowledge.
(3) Reduced Administrative Burden through Combined Management of SSL Server Certificates and Domains
SSL Certificates can be managed together with registered domains using the domain administration tool, Domain Navi.
The GlobalSign Skip Application Service
Skip Application is the world’s first SSL service by an SSL certificate authority to create both the private key and the CSR and safely deliver them to the applicant. The service was launched by GlobalSign on January 15 this year. When other SSL certificates are issued the CSR information is required from the server being used or the server intended for use. Obtaining this requires a high degree of technical skill. However the new Skip Application service doesn’t require the client to provide CSR information and makes it possible to acquire a SSL server certificate as soon as a domain has been registered and without having to confirm a server.

(*1)ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers): American non-profit organization responsible for the global management of Internet domain names and IP addresses. It also holds the authority to designate official domain registration companies.
(*2)Private key: Of the pair of keys used in the public key cryptosystem this is the key that verifies ownership and is generally not made public.
(*3)CSR: Certificate Signing Request (includes the public key information)
(*4)PKI: Public Key Infrastructure. A security system that uses the public/private key pair in public key cryptosystem technology.
(*5)eID: A citizen ID card. This is the first stage of the e-government project in Belgium. The ID card containing a digital certificate is distributed to all Belgian citizens over the age of 12.
