Tokyo, JAPAN – March 3, 2011 – GMO Internet Group company, GMO Registry today announces it will work together with Hitachi, Ltd. to apply for and operate the new generic Top Level Domain, “.hitachi”.

Worldwide there are 21 gTLDs in use (“.com” “.net” etc.) including restricted domains like “.edu” and “.gov”. Internet governing body, ICANN is set to expand the existing generic top level domain space and as a result several organizations and regional governments have already announced plans to acquire new gTLDs when applications open this year.
Effective Internet communication is imperative in business and many global corporations have hinted that they will move to secure their company or brand name as a gTLD in order to strengthen their online identity.
In addition to new gTLD application consultancy services for regional governments, corporations and other organizations, GMO Registry offers registry system architecture and backend operation of both gTLDs and country code Top Level Domains.,
Says GMO Registry Executive Director, Hirokatsu Ohigashi, "Drawing on our industry experience and reputation for outstanding technology, we look forward to working with Hitachi to apply for and operate the new “.hitachi” domain.

Domain Terminology
gTLD
Generic Top Level Domain. In June 2008 the Board of ICANN, the organization that coordinates the Internet’s addressing system, approved a recommendation overhauling the rules for introducing TLDs. Until now users have been restricted to 21 gTLDs (.com, .net etc.), and with the exception of country and regional TLDs, applications for specific new gTLDS were solicited by ICANN and subjected to their application and screening process. The new gTLD rules would significantly relax the existing process, paving the way for organizations to put forward their own applications for top level domains. Applications are expected to open in 2011.
Registry
An organization responsible for the central management of a domain name. Behind each TLD is a registry that manages all original domain name data.
ccTLD
Country code Top Level Domain. Top level domains based on two letter ISO 3166-1 country codes. There are approximately 250 ccTLDs used to identify countries including “.jp” (Japan), “.us” (US) or “.cn” (China).
