GMO Registry to Partner with Canon to Apply for “.canon” Domain

GMO Registry forms partnership agreement with Canon that will see the two companies work together to apply for and operate brand TLD, “.canon”.

Tokyo – May 10, 2010 – GMO Internet Group company, GMO Registry today announces it will work together with Canon to apply for and operate the new generic Top Level Domain, “.canon”.

On March 16, Canon revealed plans to acquire the new gTLD, “.canon”. The new Canon brand TLD would enable the company to unify its online identity globally with an intuitive TLD that is easier to remember than “canon.com” and other existing domain names.

GMO Registry was built on the domain industry expertise and sophisticated system design and operation technology of the GMO Internet Group. Canon chose to partner with GMO Registry to apply for and operate its new gTLD based on the group’s industry experience and excellent reputation in technology.

Says GMO Registry Executive Director, Hirokatsu Ohigashi, “We are excited to be working with Canon, a major global brand name in Japan. GMO Registry looks forward to helping introduce the “.canon” brand TLD. “

Domain Terminology
gTLD
(Generic Top Level Domain) In June 2008 the Board of ICANN, the organization that coordinates the Internet’s addressing system, approved a recommendation overhauling the rules for introducing TLDs. Until now users have been restricted to 21 gTLDs (.com, .net etc.), and with the exception of country and regional TLDs, applications for specific new gTLDS were solicited by ICANN and subjected to their application and screening process. The new gTLD rules would significantly relax the existing process, paving the way for organizations to put forward their own applications for top level domains. Applications are expected to open in 2011.
Registry
An organization responsible for the central management of a domain name. Behind each TLD is a registry that manages all original domain name data.
