Onamae.com Accepting Sunrise Applications for New .co Domain

Tokyo – April 26, 2010 – Onamae.com, the ICANN-accredited domain registrar operated by GMO Internet, today begins accepting applications for the new .co top level domain following the opening of the global sunrise period for trademark holders.
The .co domain is the country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) for Columbia. With a character string that is a recognized abbreviation of the words “company” and “corporation” and that is also just one letter/keystroke away from the high-profile .com, the new .co is expected to be a popular top level domain.

About the .co Domain
1. An Ideal Business Domain
Strong demand is expected for .co from Japanese companies due to its similarity to .co.jp and because of its association with the words “company” and “corporation”. In particular we expect to receive many applications from companies with names that end in Co.

2. Protect your Brand and Secure Traffic
The .co domain can be used to secure traffic from .com typing errors, safeguard access to .com websites, and ensure phishing sites are not set up with similar domain names. Securing your domain name in the .co namespace eliminates the potential user confusion and misunderstanding that may occur if a third party acquires your name, for this reason .co is also attracting attention from a brand protection perspective.

About the .co Domain Global Sunrise Phase
The Global Sunrise phase protects the rights of trademark holders by allowing them to register their trademarks in the .co domain before the opening of general registration. In the interest of fairness, when multiple applications are received for the same domain an auction will be held to determine the registrant.
